Barry built his first pool in 1989 and took his first pool industry job in 1980. By 2002, he was working full-time in pool construction. He founded Backyard Creations in 2008, though the company operated under the Custom Gunite Pools name before that. The business survived the 2008–2009 recession—a period that cost Barry more than $100,000 in debt tied to unpaid accounts. He recovered by paying a $40,000 surcharge on equipment to keep the crew working and projects moving. That experience shaped his approach: honest communication about costs, realistic timelines, and a refusal to overextend or overpromise.

The company serves clients throughout Northwest Georgia and Southeast Tennessee, operating from a base in Calhoun. Much of the work comes through word-of-mouth referrals and repeat relationships with subdivision developers like Smith Douglas and general contractors working on motels and event venues in Rome, Dalton, Chattanooga, and Cleveland. There's no retail storefront—Backyard Creations operates as a service-based business, meeting clients on-site and managing projects from start to finish.



Barry's philosophy centers on crew stability and quality control. He values the team he has built and isn't interested in scaling beyond what can be managed well. The cleaning business is being grown methodically, with a target of 150 accounts to generate steady monthly revenue while maintaining service quality.
